O-LUCE di Giuseppe Ostuni Catalogue Raisonné, catalog raisonné in two volumes
Thomas Braeuninger tells the story of Guiseppe Ostuni (1907 - 1994), who was born in Trieste. A treasure trove with many historical documents and illustrations. A more than comprehensive insight into the history of the O-LUCE company (1947 - 1982) and only original with the hyphen!
Volume I paints a comprehensive picture of O-Luce's company history and takes a look at the life story of its founder, Giuseppe Ostuni. Originally from Trieste, he founded his company O-Luce in Milan at the age of 40 and became a pioneer of innovative, modern lighting units. Ostuni's brother Angelo and Franco Buzzi made O-Luce famous beyond Italy's borders and played a decisive role in shaping the lighting design of the early 1950s. New materials, such as Plexiglas and industrial glass, or new light source technologies, such as Cornalux or halogen light, had a decisive influence on the design of modern luminaires, and here too Ostuni and his young designers, above all Tito Agnoli, Joe Colombo and Bruno Gecchelin, were pioneers of lighting design. With over 600 drawings, photographs and documents, many of which have never been published before, this is a fascinating chapter in the history of Italian design.
Volume II presents all the sources and historical evidence on which the Catalogue Raisonné is based. After a detailed overview of Ostuni's systematics, the most important of his designers are presented in biographies. The main part of the second volume is the Catalogue Raisonné, which is divided into four sections: wall lamps, table lamps, floor lamps and ceiling lamps, containing a total of over 560 lamps. Each luminaire is described with model number, designer, year of design, material, dimensions and - in cases where they have been published - bibliographical details. Volume II also contains a critical chronological overview of the O-Luce luminaires published at the time in specialist literature, magazines and catalogs. A selected bibliography and a comprehensive index of the relevant illustrations mentioned conclude the second volume.
